O-rings should always be lubricated prior to assembly so the O-ring doesn't deform. Doesn't hurt to put a bit of lube on the surfaces it contacts as well. It doesn't take much, just enough to make things shiny. I deal with critcal O-rings on a weekly basis with my underwater cameras. The consequences of a leak are about $4K.
